Richmond's first Toastmasters club is celebrating its 25th anniversary on Thursday, March 9. The theme for the Rich-Del Toastmasters anniversary night is celebrating successes. The anniversary dinner and meeting is already full, but guests are always welcome at the weekly meetings.
"The reason for the club is to improve public and private speaking skills," said Fred Pawluk, president of the Rich-Del Toastmasters. Many members joined because of their fear of speaking in public.
There are currently 22 members with approximately 50 current and past members attending the anniversary event. Club members represent a big cross-section of the population with people joining for a number of reasons, said Pawluk. Members vary in age from 18 to in their 60s.
The Rich-Del club was founded in 1974 by a group of realtors who wanted to improve their communication skills. Members of this club were responsible for founding the other toastmasters groups in Richmond. "We are the seed in the community," said Pawluk. The celebration is being held at the Richmond Country Club, 9100 Steveston Highway at 6:15 p.m.
Meetings are held on Thursdays from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in Room WC5 at McNair High School in Richmond. The club's alternate meeting site is at the Richmond Nature Park, Westminster Highway at No 5 Road in Richmond during school vacations.
