Grammarian
The role of the Grammarian / Ah Counter is to evaluate the use of the English grammar in our presentation. The Grammarian should comment on uses of grammar, word pictures and vocabulary. The Grammarian also evaluates the use of unnecessary words or "word whiskers" in our presentations. Some clubs charge a fine for each of these extraneous words, for example 5¢ per offence to a maximum of 50¢
This is a positive evaluation. Both good and bad uses of grammar, word pictures and vocabulary should be addressed.
PRIOR TO THE MEETING
- Call the Chairman to determine if there is a theme for the meeting. If there is, select a word that addresses the theme. If there is no theme, then select a word for the day that is appropriate.
- Prepare a brief description of the word, explaining the meaning, derivation and an example of how it could be used.
- Write the word clearly and visibly on a board or a flip chart with the description.
THINGS TO WATCH FOR
- Note the different kinds of bad habits that people have incorporated into their speaking style.
- Note how often people repeat such words as "you know"
- Note the use of "uhs", "ums" or "ehs" in their presentations.
- Note the use of unnecessary "and" or "and so" to fill pauses.
AT THE MEETING
- At the beginning of the meeting, briefly explain the role of the Grammarian. Present your word - be clear and concise. Provide examples of usage. Challenge those present to use it when they speak.
- When you are doing your evaluation, note the misuse or good use of grammar, vocabulary and word pictures. Encourage better word selection, such as "outstanding" or "great" instead of "nice." Watch for improper pronunciation, such as "tellin" instead of telling"; repetitive words such as "really, really" or "very, very"; and errors such as "you did good". Comment on pleasant turns of the English language.
- Try and catch as many of these "word whiskers" as you can.
- Keep the report light, but make it concise.
